Brand Story

My name is Rafael Antun, and I was born in Atlanta Georgia. At around 6 months old, I moved to Miami Florida where I grew up and have lived ever since. For as long as I could remember, I’ve absolutely loved sports, specifically Miami Hurricane football. Since attending my first game against Ohio State in 2011, I’ve been to over 70 Miami football games since and have watched every game. While watching my favorite team play every Saturday is fun, the true joy is being able to be alongside my family for every game. For me, Miami Hurricane athletics have always been deeper than sports, and serve as bonding and family time for my parents, my brother, and myself. The impact sports have made in my life has impacted me and my family in so many ways. However, I wish to pass this same impact along to others. I aspire to use sports to further strengthen communities, and to help those who haven’t had very fortunate lives to feel connected to others through sports. As a graduate of Belen Jesuit, I have been formed into a better man and more caring man, sharing moral values and willingness to help others. Evidence of this can be seen on the impact myself and other Belen students have had on others. In my case, it was my involvement in Comfort Crusaders, a non-profit organization founded by myself and 4 other friends, with the goal of serving the community. Through the organization, many fundraisers and events were done to help children who were underprivileged and in some cases victims of human trafficking. Personally, with the help of the organization and Belen, I was able to organize a sports equipment drive, where all equipment collected was donated to Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Miami Florida. Once the equipment donated, I and other members of Comfort Crusaders would take weekly trips to BBBS, and used the equipment collected by the drive to play different sports with the kids. With these weekly visits, I met several kids who shared similar interests in sports with me, making memorable moments and a positive impact in the community with the help of sports. Overall, my ultimate goal is to use my knowledge of sports, catholic high school formation, service background, and family experience to create a positive impact in the world, hoping to change lives and create memories using sports.

Baseball Analytics Rhetorically

Looking Back

Throughout the course of this class, I have not only learned many new things when it comes to composing, but I have also re-learned and in many cases learned more about things I had previously known about. I have learned not only how to compose writing works, but how to support them in more ways than one, such as sources, rhetorical strategies, or the use of different genres. Over the course of the three major projects, I was able to strengthen my use of genres to support my writing. I found that I best learned how to utilize genres in the Project three multigenre persuasive campaign. In this project, the goal was to use three separate genres in order to support your stance on an issue within your discourse community. Personally, I felt as if using 3 different genres allowed me to create a more effective and persuasive campaign, as it allowed me to show my viewpoint for different types of people, due to the fact that some people are better visual leaners than reading learners and vice-versa. Overall, this project to me was very impactful as it showed me the many benefits of displaying your argument for multiple audiences, and the accommodations you may have to make to spread your message effectively.

In this class, the use of rhetorical strategies could be seen most prevalently in project two, which asked us to use ethos, pathos, and logos to support our research from project one. Despite it being taught to me in this class, I had already previously learned about the three main rhetorical strategies and what they were. However, I had never used them in writing prior to this class. In using them to support my research, I found them to be a very effective source of supporting evidence, as persuasion usually involves one of ethos, pathos, or logos. Besides using them in project 2, rhetorical strategies can be seen in my rhetorical rationale for project 3, which again uses many different rhetorical strategies to spread my stance on the issue of MLB salary limits.

Overall, the courses three major projects have taught me multiple ways to improve my arguments and have allowed for me to improve my writing and composition. I believe that the most effective and impactful part of everything was the way that the projects would stack on top of each other, with project one leading into project two and so forth. This stacking of the projects and well as the feedback left on the rough drafts and final submissions has allowed for me to continually improve my writing skills through practice and constructive criticism. This class has allowed for me to take the next step with my writing skills, which should continue developing throughout my time at FSU.

In final, the information I gained about genres, composing, and rhetorical strategies throughout the duration of this semester has greatly positively impacted my writing skills, and will continue to do so throughout my college career.
